one of my new years resolutions was to read more frequently. i made a list of books that i had been wanting to read and started at the top. here is a summary of my progress thus far:

Cold Mountain
The Road
The Fight Club
Girl in Translation
The Bell Jar
Atonement
My Name is Asher Lev
The Life of Pi
Mere Christianity
Team of Rivals
1984
It Sucked and then I Cried
Never Let Me Go
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me and Other Concerns
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
Eve and the Choice Made in Eden
A Thousand Splendid Suns
The Millennium Trilogy
-The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
-The Girl Who Played with Fire
-The Girl Who kicked the Hornet’s nest
The Lovely Bones
The Sisters Brothers
My Sister’s Keeper
Unorthodox
Santaland Diaries
Ceremony
The Happiness Project
Gilead
after ending college, actually, more specifically, after leaving BYU, i realized that i never read anymore. at BYU, i was reading all of the time for classes and then, once that stopped, my reading stopped. so it took me a while to get back into it but, around october or november of last year, i started reading again! for fun! i started with the color purple and then read really quickly through the poisonwood bible, the help, bossypants, and the history of love. i felt like my old self again. i was the kid who stayed up late at nights, not because i was sneaking out to be with friends, but because i was up reading. if you have any good book recommendations, feel free to share! im blowing through them!

  1. alexis, i'm drooling over your list. how was A Tree Grows in Brooklyn? living here makes me feel like i need to read it. also Asher Lev is at the top of mine - it'd be fun to swap notes on that.

i absolutely loved Poisonwood Bible when I read in in september-october of last year, even though it completely broke my heart. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close left me laughing aloud one minute and crying the next. have you seen the film version of Never Let Me Go? i really, really like Carey Mulligan (though An Education becomes more and more disturbing every time i see it).

as for recommendations, and speaking of Chaim Potok, i really loved The Chosen, though from what i've heard a lot of people like Asher Lev better. and on the topic of fathers, sons, and faith, one of my very favorite books of all time is Gilead by Marilynne Robinson. have you read it?

anyway, your list is inspiring my own. much like.

p.s. will says hi, and that he's glad your blog doesn't follow our Seven Commandments.

  2. asher lev is so good. i actually have read the chosen and i loved it which is one of the reasons why i wanted to read asher lev. its been a few years since ive read the chosen, but asher lev is much better in my time-biased opinion.

a tree grows in brooklyn was really lovely - it was actually really similar to girl in translation, i felt. the time period was different by about a century- but both are set in new york and both are about young girls that are fighters. theyre also both pretty easy reads. i read them each over a weekend. i really liked each of the books a lot + i love new york, so that was a nice bonus. (im trying to figure out how we can get out there, btw. ricks has never been.)

okay- carey mulligan. ricks and i are weird and sometimes, when we hate who has been chosen for a role in a movie, we recast that role. we think anne hathaway is putting a total damper on batman and my choice for the recast was carey mulligan. i think she is awesome. and, yeah, an education freaks me out. anyway, no i havent seen the movie but its probably something ill do when i finish the book. (keira knightley connection -that just reminded me that i forgot to add to this list that ive read atonement this year, too, which was excellent.)

and, based on your recommendation, Gilead is going on my list! thanks, grace! ps. its fun to talk books with someone who likes something other than the hunger games and twilight!
